Corwyn has always believed in a
strong foundation of obedience
for our personal dogs. We
recommend at least a basic
obedience class for every puppy
we place, and support our puppy
families with advice and problem
solving for the life of any dog we
place. Obedience training is one
of the most important things you
can provide your pointer to help
him learn to behave as a part of
your family and to keep him safe.
In addition to training for at home and
"real life" Corwyn has always participated
in competitive obedience with our personal
dogs. Through the years we've had
increasing success in the ring with our
dogs, learning thru experience.

Obedience & Rally Competition:
Here is a brief description of some of the requirements for AKC Rally & Obedience work. At
each level, the dog must qualify three times in order to gain the title. Dogs are scored and
ranked compared to dogs entered on that day:
Rally - Uses signs to direct handler and dog thru a course which includes heeling
patterns, turns, stops, sits, downs, stays, and demonstrations that the dog
understands heel position (sitting and walking at your side). Advanced Rally levels
include off-lead heeling, jumping, and temptations to be resisted (such as food and
toys.) Titles to be gained are: RN: Rally Novice, RA: Rally Advanced, RE: Rally
Excellent.
Obedience:
Novice (title achieved is Companion Dog -or CD)
Heeling On Leash (includes turns, changes of pace, and sitting when handler stops)
Heeling in Figure 8 Pattern (includes sitting when handler stops)
Stand for Examination (Lead is removed, dog is left standing while judge touches the
dog on head, shoulders and rear)
Heeling Off Leash (includes turns, changes of pace and sitting when handler stops)
Recall (Dog will be left in a sit, then called to sit in front, then asked to heel to
handler's side)
Sit-Stay - Dog is left at far end of the ring for one minute
Down-Stay - Dog is left at far end of the ring for three minutes
Open (title achieved is Companion Dog Excellent - or CDX)
Heeling Off Leash (includes turns, changes of pace and sitting when handler stops)
Off-Leash Heeling in Figure 8 Pattern (includes sitting when handler stops)
Drop on Recall (Dog is left on a sit-stay, called and then asked to DOWN before
reaching the handler. Dog is then called to front, then asked to heel to the
handler's side)
Retrieve on Flat - Dog is to retrieve a dumbbell, thrown by handler, when sent and
bring it promptly back
Retrieve over High Jump - Dog is to jump, retrieve dumbbell and return over the
jump when sent
Broad Jump - Dog is left on a sit and required to clear a wide jump laid on the
ground and return to the handler.
Out of Sight Sit-Stay - Dog is left sitting & handler departs the ring for three minutes
Out of Sight Down-Stay - Dog is left on a down & handler departs the ring for five
minutes
Utility (title achieved is Utility Dog - or UD)
Signal Exercise - Includes heel, stay, sit, down and recall, all using ONLY hand
signals
Moving Stand - dog is heeling and handler tells/signals dog to stay. Dog is then
examined briefly by the judge. Dog is then called to heel from across the ring.
Directed Jumping - Dog is sent across the ring between two jumps (one bar, one
solid) Dog must turn and sit on command. Dog is then directed to one of the two
jumps and must clear the jump and return to the handler. Dog is then sent again, to
clear the second jump
Directed Retrieve - Three gloves are placed, one at each corner and one in the center
of the ring. Dog must retrieve the correct glove as directed by handler.
Scent Articles - Twelve dumbbells are placed on the ground - six leather, six metal.
ONE additional article (leather or metal), scented by handler, is placed among
them. Dog is sent to retrieve the dumbbell scented by the handler from among the
group of dumbbells. A second (different) dumbbell is scented by handler and
placed in the group. Dog is then sent a second time to retrieve the other dumbbell
scented by handler.
Placements are given for each level of competition on a given day of competition.
Consistent performances once titles are obtained can gain points towards an
Obedience Trial Championship (OTCH).
